Impetigo

(Impetigo contagiosa, Bullous impetigo, Ecthyma)

Impetigo is a bacterial skin infection characterized by microscopic pus-filled blisters.  It is caused when either of the staphylococcus or streptococcus bacteria find their way into broken or irritated skin, perhaps from an insect bite, a cut or other form of trauma to the skin.  (Both types of bacteria can live harmlessly on your skin until they enter through a cut or other wound and cause an infection.)

As a result of their invasion the infected skin becomes inflamed and sore.  Pustules form and after a few days these burst to form a ‘crust’.  Itching is common, but can spread the infection to other parts of the body.  Why is it so infectious?… Staphylococcus bacteria produce a toxin. This toxin attacks a protein that helps bind skin cells together. Once this protein is damaged germs quickly spread.

Impetigo mainly affects infants and children, usually appearing on their face, especially around the nose and mouth. Signs of impetigo are pimple-like lesions surrounded by reddened skin.  These lesions fill with pus, which break down over 4-6 days.

Impetigo can even potentially lead to more serious complications if the underlying cause is not corrected.  These may include Poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis (PSGN) (a kidney inflammation), Meningitis and Cellulitis.

Causes

In adults Impetigo can be caught through direct contact with lesions or with nasal carriers.  It can also be caught directly, for example through another injury to the skin, often by another dermatological condition such as dermatitis. 

Children are especially susceptible to infections because their immune systems are still developing.  This also goes a long way to explaining why Impetigo is picked up by adults.  Defective, weak or damaged immune systems allow the strep or staph bacteria to take hold more easily.  This is usually when your natural defensive and healing processes have been weakened, such as in those with diabetes or a heart condition, or those developed as a result of long-term nutritional neglect and toxicity exposure.  It is believed that many of these issues are a consequence of industrialised farming, the toxicity that this produces, food processing techniques and, of course, the reduced essential nutrient intake of a Western diet a typical stressful lifestyle.

Nutritional status
The human body requires a balanced diet that provides nutrients, minerals and vitamins for a functional and effective immune response. Immune function and ability is often reduced by factors including hormonal status, age and nutritional status. Malnutrition and heavy metal ingestion are common in Western adults, resulting in a depressed immune system that raises the risk of infection.

Treatment

The typical form of conventional treatment usually consists of topical or oral antibiotics.  These may effect a short-term solution, but do not cover the underlying deficiency.
