Allergies are the 6th leading cause of chronic disease in the Western world…

An allergy is a mistaken immune system reaction where the body develops antibodies to fight normally passive elements.  This hypersensitive response is caused by the excessive action of immunoglobulin (blood proteins that fight off infection), which leads to an over-reaction in which the immune system believes it must release more disease-fighting chemicals such as histamine, heparin, prostaglandins and inteferon.  Normal everyday substances become individually sensitive allergens/antigens, causing systemic inflammation.  (An allergen/antigen is any molecule that encounters the immune system and induces an immune reaction.)

Some of the most common allergens include:

• Plant pollens (causing Hayfever)
• Mold spores
• Drugs
• Foods (e.g. nuts, seafood, milk, wheat…)
• Insect stings
• Animal products (e.g. dust mites, dander…)

Allergic symptoms can include anything from a runny nose, red, itchy eyes, skin rashes and aural pain, to wheezing, asthma, life-threatening anaphylactic shock and death.

Allergies are most often diagnosed via a skin test or a total IgE (immunoglobulin E) serum count.

Causes
Hypersensitivity to an allergic degree can stem from many factors:

Food sensitivies are most common and are caused by the toxic ingestion of additives, preservatives, E-numbers and colourants found in Western food.
