In the case of ADHD
ADHD is a neurological disorder showing symptoms of hyperactivity, forgetfulness, mood differences, poor impulse control and easy distraction. These developmental effects result in significant impairments to interpersonal skills, educational and occupational goals, as well as cognitive and adaptive functioning.
ADHD is seen in both children and adults and is believed to affect between 3% to 5% of the population. Whilst ADHD is most commonly seen in the US and UK, it has been found to exist in every country and culture.
Symptoms of ADHD fall into two broad categories…inattention (as described above) and hyperactivity/impulsive behaviour, marked by excessive fidgeting, inappropriate action, excess noise and restlessness.
Causes
Research has found that ADHD may arise from genetic factors, with a possible link to dopamine transporters in the brain (responsible for the ability to ‘plan ahead’).
Intestinal micro-organism overgrowth can have neurotoxic effects and may produce significant amounts of damaging yeasts and bacteria, which may be contributory. Digestive and metabolic faults are also significant, with many ADHD sufferers having an inability to handle certain intolerances in their diet, including a disturbance in amino acid metabolism, a lack of sulfate metabolism and a lack of essential fatty acids, specifically omega-3 fatty acids.
Other factors include allergies, especially those involving artificial additives, and excess alcohol and tobacco smoke (especially during pregancy) which can interfere with brain development and may distort developing nerve cells.
One of the most noteworthy environmental toxins is lead (with aluminium, cadmium and mercury close behind), which has been proven to disrupt brain development, potentially leading to ADHD. Heavy metals stunt sensory nerve cells in the brain and hinder cell receptor function. At higher levels, lead exposure can actually shrink the brain itself, reducing its weight and thickness by about 13%.
Hyperactivity can also be triggered by nutritional deficiencies as well as the toxic accumulation of heavy metals in the body. ADHD sufferers tend to have raised levels of manganese and reduced levels of zinc, as well as vitamin B-6, calcium, selenium and iron deficiency, in conjunction with high lead and copper ingestion. Such deficiencies are thought to increase heavy metal toxicity, triggering hyperactivity.
